Preparations for the New Gallery

Earlier this year work started on the former bachelor apartments to convert them into a new exhibition space, leading off the vestibule between the Great Dining Room and the Sculpture Gallery. Opening on the 27th May, the ‘New Gallery’ exhibition will tell the story of the 6th Duke of Devonshire, Victorian Britain’s most inspirational and eligible bachelor, and the dramatic impact he had on Chatsworth. The finishing touches are now being added to the exhibition, which will feature items such as his autograph book, diary, and treasures from his collection. We look forward to welcoming all of our visitors to take a look!

Just been round this fascinating exhibition, beautifully presented in lovely new rooms - congratulations to all. The Duke comes across as a complex, probably self-indulgent, sweetheart, who had the most amazing amount of fun, and most of the time seems to have been aware of his good fortune. Loved the variety, the insight into real lives (letters, diaries, quirky things), the sense of the richness of your archives being shared with visitors. Thought the map and plates on the wall was the best piece of clear, witty and appropriate interpretation I have seen for some time. And the views out to the park aren't bad either!
